Early intervention is key to many forms of communication and language delays and disorders. Learning how to build on a child’s existing communication abilities is the focus at this stage. At times, families may have been advised to “wait and see” in hopes that the child will “outgrow” their challenges; however, research has shown that this is not the best approach; “wait and see” can result in increased communication frustration and related academic and behavioral challenges. Early intervention can change this trajectory for young children, especially those diagnosed with autism.
